Internet Marketing is not about the wonders of technology. It is about achieving your marketing objectives.

What is Internet Marketing?

Internet marketing is the process of using online media and technologies to achieve marketing objectives.

The important point is that online marketing is not about the wonders of technology. It is about achieving your marketing goals.

For many organisations their internet marketing goals are to generate new website visitors, new sales, new leads and repeat business.

Some organisations use internet marketing purely for increasing brand awareness, whereas others may be seeking partnerships or investment. In the Not for Profit sector, the goals may be to increase membership or donations or to apply pressure on Governments or commercial organisations.

Where to start?

One of the great benefits of internet marketing is that you really do not have to do it all at once. You can start small, test a few ideas and monitor the results.

A good starting point is to mirror what works in your traditional marketing. For instance:

Traditional Online
Direct Mail Email Marketing
Local Advertising Google Places & PPC Marketing
Word of Mouth Social Media & Ratings/Reviews
Local Directories Online Directories

UK Adults in 2010

  1. 60% accessed the internet every day
  2. 62% bought or ordered goods online
  3. 43% posted to a social network, blog or chat site

Taking the first steps

Start small and measure what works for you.

Google Adwords provides a quick and relatively easy way to run a trial. Take a look at Google's step-by-step Adwords Beginners Guide.

Our recommendations:

  • Start with a low daily budget
  • Limit your network to Google Search only
  • Select a few keywords relating to your organisation that are not too competitive
  • Use Google Adwords and Google Analytics
    to monitor your advert's performance
